Department of Mathematics

The department of mathematics was established in 5-4-1952. Dr.Shiva Ghosh from Cotton College was the first lecturer in the department of Mathematics. The built up area of the department is 185 m2.Total number of books in the library is 250. The department organizes seminars and popular talks for the benefits of the students.

Activities

The department publishes twice a year, one is wall magazine called ‘Tractrix’ and the other one is annual departmental magazine named ‘Trapezium’.  

Special lectures/workshops/ seminar with external experts:

  1. Dr K.C. Goswami delivered a lecture on “Beauty in  Numbers :Ref to Ramanujan ”on 15/12/2009 on the occasion of Ramanujan day.
  2. Dr K.C. Goswami delivered a lecture on “Magic with numbers”on 28/12/2011 on the occasion of Ramanujan day.
  3. A lecture on “Contribution of Indian Mathematics with special reference to Ramanujan”  was organized in the Department in collaboration with Assam Academy of Mathematics  on 13/10/2012. Dr. Dilip Kumar Sarma ,H.O.D of Mathematics, Cotton College delivered the lecture.
  4. Department is publishing regularly an annual magazine and a wall magazine by the contributions of students and teachers. The name of the magazine is “Trapezium” and the wall magazine is “Tractrix”. It helps the students in developing their  writing skills.

    6. A lecture on “Some aspects of fundamental concepts of Mathematics” was organized in the Department on 12/3/14. Prof. Bhaben Chandra Kalita, Prof of Mathematics, Gauhati University delivered the lecture. 
    7. Remedial classes were organized for 5th semester Major students on 15/02/14 and 10/04/14 on “Basics of C-programming. Dr. Hemanta Kumar Sarma, Prof of Mathematics, Gauhati University conducted both the classes.
    8. An educational tour for 3rd semester Major students was organized on 22/11/14 to NEHU, Shillong.
